Debt And The Judgment Of God

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34).

America is a blessed nation. God has honored America because our nation has honored God. Though far from perfect, America has an undeniable Christian heritage, and has consequently been exalted as a nation.

We often hear talk about “favored nation status” as it relates to the political environment. I believe God grants “favored nation status” to countries that honor Him. But “favored nation status” is not indefinite. That status, along with all its resulting benefits, is conditional.

Signs of God’s judgment are legion. Not the least of which is our spiraling debt. In speaking to His covenant people God said, For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee. (Deut. 15:6). It was the intention of God that His people be the head and not the tail (Deut. 28:13).

One of the marks of God’s blessing is abundant provision which gives the ability to lend to other nations. God forbade Israel from borrowing. He wanted to elevate them and make them a lender nation, not a debtor nation. Proverbs tells us that the borrower is servant to the lender (22:7). Debtor nations become servants to others. Unmanageable debt is a form of bondage.

Remember the McDonald’s signs which used to say “Billions and Billions served”? America’s motto could read “Trillions and Trillions Borrowed”. As of April 7 America’s debt was $8,392,894,446,880. Our national debt has continued to increase by $2.42 billion per day since Sept. 30, 2005.

To make matters more perplexing, the acceleration of debt has skyrocketed under the leadership of the “conservatives”. Talking about smaller government while swelling the bureaucracy is not only disingenuous, it is wrong. I surely am not for the “tax and spend” liberals, but I am not for the “borrow and spend” conservatives either! Cutting taxes increases revenues but failing to adjust spending in proportion to income only increases the debt.

Common sense tells you that you cannot spend what you do not have indefinitely. Living above one’s means is irresponsible. Spending someone else’s money is immoral. Saddling future generations with debt is not right.

They say people get the kind of government they deserve. In a democracy, people get the kind of government they are! Our leaders reflect the character and values of the folks they represent.

Righteousness exalts a nation. Obeying God’s principles and honoring Him is the path to blessedness.

“Lord, send revival to your church, and send us leaders who will do the right thing! In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
